El guión / The Script:

El largometraje es una versión libre de “Poucinet” (Pulgarcito) escrito por el francés Edouard Labouyale (Contes bleus, París, 1864) a partir de un cuento finlandés, y adaptado por José Martí para la Revista No1 de La Edad de Oro, publicada en 1889.

The feature it´s a free version of “Poucinet” (Tom Thumb) originally written by the French Edouard Labouyale (Contes bleus, Paris, 1864), and based on a Finnish story adapted by José Martí for “La Edad de Oro” No. 1 Magazine published in 1889.

Los personajes / The characters

Meñique:

Es un pequeño campesino, muy inteligente e ingenioso. Le gusta dibujar y construir mecanismos para mejorar el trabajo en el campo. El desea un mundo donde todos vivan felices. Tiene complejo por su estatura y por su mala suerte. Pero su gran curiosidad, bondad y valentía le ayudarán a comprender que el conocimiento y el amor son virtudes muy poderosas.

Meñique:

He is a little peasant, very intelligent and ingenious. He likes to draw and to build mechanisms for improve the work in the field. He wants a world where everybody lives happy. He has complex for his stature and bad luck. But his great curiosity, kindness and courage will help to understand that the knowledge and the love are very powerful virtues

Denise:

La princesa es una mujer muy apasionada e inteligente. Aparenta ser vanidosa y superficial, pero en realidad no soporta la avaricia de su padre el rey. Y por las noches se transforma en una especie de Robín Hood que roba a los ricos del palacio para ayudar a los pobres. Esta ladrona posee un traje especial de camuflaje, el cual a veces tiene sus pequeñas fallas.

Denise:

The princess is a very passionate and intelligent woman. She pretends to be conceited and superficial, but in fact doesn't support his father's avarice. And at nights she transforms in a kind of Robin Hood that steals to the rich to help the poor people. Went she´s a thief, use an special suit of camouflag

e that sometimes have small flaws.

El Espejo de la Media Naranja:

Es un objeto mágico de origen francés que le regaló la mamá de Denise a su hija antes de morir. El espejo debe buscar el amor ideal a su dueña, y luego tratar por todos los medios que esta unión tenga un final feliz. Y para esto cuenta con proyectores de imágenes, buscadores en la red de Intermagia, paneles solares y otros muchos recursos.

The Mirror of the Better Half

It is a magic object of French origin that gave the Denise´s mother to her daughter before dying. The mirror should find the ideal love to its owner, and then to achieve that this union has a happy end. And for this he holds projectors of images, searchers in the Intermagia nets, solar panels and other many resources.

Hachibaldo, Picoretto y la Señora Arroyo:

Viven en un enorme bosque mágico. Hachibaldo, Picoretto y la Señora Arroyo ayudarán a Meñique en su aventura de cortar el árbol encantado, abrir el pozo real y darle agua. El hacha es fanfarrona, alegre y siempre tiene sueño. El pico es sordomudo; muy tímido, reservado, y un escultor de gran talento. Y la nuez, quien hace con el agua lo que desee, es desconfiada, romántica en extremo y todo lo dice cantando.

Hachibaldo, Picoretto and Lady Stream:

They live in an enormous magic forest. Hachibaldo, Picoretto and Lady Stream will help Meñique in his adventure of cutting the charmed tree, to open the real well and give it water. The axe is boaster, cheerful and is always drowsy. The pick is deaf-mute; very shy, reserved, and a sculptor with great talent. And the nut, who makes with the water what she wants, is distrusted, romantic and speaks singing.

Barusa:

Es la tía de Denise. Nunca aceptó que el rey escogiera a su hermana como reina y muere de despecho. Pero regresa como una sombra del País de las Tinieblas para vengarse. Ella posee una varita mágica de última generación, con un extenso y variado menú de hechi

cerías; y una escoba –llamada Escóbula- la cual es el modelo más avanzado de esa época. Su única debilidad es que no puede caer dentro de la sombra de un ser viviente.

Barusa:

She is the aunt of Denise. She never accepted that the king choose his sister as queen, and dies from spite. But returns like a shade from the Darkness Land to retaliate. She possesses a latest generation magic twig, with an extensive and varied menu of sorceries; and a broom -call Escóbula - which is the most advanced model in that age. Her only weakness is that she cannot fall inside the shade of another alive being.

e. Su disfrute mayor es darse baños de dinero, y bailar con sus sacos de oro y piedras preciosas. Y su mayor pesadilla es la ladrona que roba en el palacio.

The King:

Avaricious in extreme, ignorant and calculator, accumulates an enormous fortune in the Treasure´s Living Room, a great chamber that works as a save strongbox. His bigger enjoyment is to take a “money shower", and to dance with its sacks of gold and precious stones. And their biggest nightmare is the thief that steals in the palace.

El Edecán:

Un sujeto cobarde y pérfido que esconde sus malas intenciones detrás de una falsa inocencia o un total despiste. Está enamorado perdidamente de la princesa Denise. Pero su amor es un sentimiento retorcido

por la propia avaricia. Le tiene pánico a su madre, la bruja Barusa, y le es incondicional mientras ella le satisfaga sus deseos.

The Aide-de-camp

A cowardly and perfidious fellow that hides their bad intentions behind a false innocence or a total misleads. He is in love madly of the princess Denise. But their

love is a feeling twisted by the own avarice. He has panic to his mother, the witch Barusa, and he´s unconditional while she satisfies his own desires.

Pedro y Pablo:

Pedro personifica la haraganería. Es lento física y mentalmente, comilón, burlón, e incondicional a su hermano mayor, pero más por miedo que por convicción. Pablo es la soberbia en persona. Iracundo, nervioso, irónico. Es mañoso y traicionero. Sufre de ataques de ira, los cuales lo dotan de una desproporcionada fuerza física.

Peter and Paul:

The Meñique´s brothers. Peter personifies the laziness. It is slow physical and mentally, gluttonous, mocking, and unconditional to his bigger brother, but more for fear than for conviction. Paul is the arrogance in person. Choleric, nervous, ironic. He is clever and traitor. Suffers many attacks of anger, which endow it of a disproportionate physics force.

Tom

El gigante es como un niño grande que busca desesperadamente una amistad. Cambia de de ánimo con rapidez, es desconfiado y de pocas entendederas. Vaga de un lugar a otro buscando un bosque dónde vivir, y quejándose de que nadie lo quiere.

Tom

The giant is as a big boy that looks for a friendship hopelessly. Changes of spirit quickly, is distrusted and dumb. He wanders of a place to another looking for a forest to live, and complaining that nobody loves her.

El Capitán de la guardia:

Es de carácter irascible, mandón, ridículo y patético por sus poses sobreactuadas y sus extraordinarias dotes para la guataquería. Trata mal a sus subordinados y exhibe con orgullo sus malos modales –imitando a su jefe el rey-.

The Guard Captain:

He has an irascible character, bossy, ridiculous and pathetic for their overact posers and his extraordinary gifts for flattering. He tries bad his subordinates and exhibits with pride his bad mannered -a king imitation -.

Sinopsis del guión / Script Summary

Es la historia de un pequeño joven campesino que quiere sacar a su familia de la pobreza. Una plaga de insectos que destruye la cosecha de la finca donde vive, y el encuentro con el Espejo Mágico de la Media Naranja, son los sucesos que lo llevan a la aventura. El Espejo le revela quién es la mujer de sus sueños y lo convoca a ir a la ciudad junto a sus hermanos Pablo y Pedro.

Ya en el camino, Meñique y sus hermanos se enteran de que un enorme roble encantado tiene al palacio del rey en las tinieblas y sin agua; y que el soberano a prometido otorgar el título de marqués y dar a su hija, la princesa Denise, en matrimonio, a quien logre cortar el árbol y abrir un pozo. Y Meñique se sorprende al comprobar que la princesa es la "media naranja" que le mostró el espejo mágico.

Pero él no sabe que el árbol gigante que cubre al palacio ha sido creado por la bruja Barusa. Ella quiere vengarse del rey robándole el tesoro que esconde en una inmensa caja fuerte, y casando a su hijo el Edecán con la princesa. Y el pequeño se convertirá en un obstáculo para sus malvados propósitos.

Antes de llegar a su destino, nuestro héroe se enfrentará a un bosque encantado, y en él tendrá que ganarse a tres objetos mágicos: el hacha Hachibaldo, el pico Picoretto, y la fuente de agua, con forma de nuez, nombrada Señora Arroyo. Y será el espejo mágico quien le enseñará a usar su inteligencia para vencer todos los obstáculos.

Alrededor de la ciudad, una enorme favela es el hogar de los pobres. Y una misteriosa ladrona roba en el palacio para darles dinero. Ella también robará el corazón de Meñique y pondrá en duda la predicción del Espejo de la Media Naranja.

Finalmente el pequeño campesino triunfará en el empeño de cortar el árbol, abrir el pozo, vencer a un gigante, derrotar a la bruja y conquistar a su amada. Todo gracias a la ayuda de sus amigos mágicos y porque finalmente aprende que “el saber puede más que la fuerza”.

It is the history of a a very short young peasant called Meñique, who wants to free his family from poverty. A plague of insects that destroys the harvest at the farm and the encounter with The Mirror of the Better Half¨, a rare magical object shaped as a vanity case, are the events that begin the adventure. The Mirror reveals to Meñique who is his dreams woman and urges him to follow his brothers Pablo and Pedro to the city.

On their way to the city they learned that an enormous enchanted tree has unexpectedly grown next to the king’s palace and retains him in darkness and without water. The monarch has promised to confer the marquis title and marry his daughter to the person who cuts the tree and opens a well. Meñique was very surprised to know that the princess was the Better Half, as demonstrated by the magic mirror.

Motivated by curiosity and cheated by his brothers Meñique gets lost. He now finds himself inside bewitched woods. Here he meets Tom, the giant but the trees will not let him through. However, following the advices of the mirror and his ingenuity the boy gets into the woods. Once inside, he becomes a close friend of the three magic objects, each one of them belongs to a different world. Hachibaldo, the ax, Picoretto, the pick, and the walnut water fountain, named Lady Stream. The boy shows them his intelligence, courage and fidelity.

However, a sinister living being is also interested in these magic objects. Therefore, Barusa, the witch, follows Meñique´s route. She is the one responsible for the extraordinary events occurred in the palace. She feels resentment toward the king and is now returning from the Land of Darkness. She is materialized in the shadow of her son the Escort, who is deeply in love with his cousin Denise. The witch looks for vengeance. Her plan is to marry the Escort to the Princess by means of the magic objects, to cut the tree, to open the well and later on to steal the fortune from the Royal Treasure Salon.

Around the city, an enormous village is the house of the poor. And a mysterious thief steals in the palace to give them money. She will also steal the heart of Meñique and it will question the prediction of the Mirror. Finally our small hero will triumph in the zeal of cutting the tree, to open the well, to won the giant's friendship, to defeat the witch and to conquer his dreams woman. Everything thanks to the help of his magic friends and because finally he learns that the knowledge can more than the force.
